automatic IWC Portuguese Chrono-Automatic ,

Many people have wondered why the GMT wasn't used for the moon missions and there are two reasons. 1) It is an automatic IWC Portuguese Chrono-Automatic , and the lack of gravity would affect the accuracy of the movement. 2) It lacks a chronograph, and unlike most of us, the Apollo Astronauts actually used their chronographs for very important things. The Omega FlightmasterNot a well-known watch but certainly one that would make a lot of sense as a space watch. The Rolex GMT Master 1675While we all know the Omega Speedmaster Professional was official NASA issue, it is widely held that Jack Swigert, of Apollo 13, was actually wearing a Rolex GMT on that fateful flight. That theory is half true. In actuality, Swigert wore his personal GMT under the sleeves of his space suit while he wore his Omega on the outside.

Today, July 16th, marks the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11's launch into the history books and towards the final frontier. As a tribute to this historical day, we decided to take a look back at all of the "space" IWC Portuguese Chrono-Automatic we've featured here on Hodinkee. Here we go:The Sturmanskie Sputnik Limited EditionThis watch is actually a modern-day tribute to the The Soviet Union's Sputnik Satellite, which in in 1957, became the first artificial satellite to reach outer space. This Russian-bred watch features a very cool Satellite that actually "orbits" the earth on the face. What is interesting is that a Sturmanskie was actually the very first watch worn into space on the wrist of Soviet Cosmonaute Yuri Gagarin. The Breitling Cosmonaute Signed by LIPWhile the Sturmanskie was the first watch in space, the Breitling Navitimer was the first IWC Portuguese Chrono-Automatic in space worn by an American. The second watch worn into space by an American was an updated version of the Navitimer called the Cosmonaute. It was worn by Captain Scott Carpenter on an orbit of about 5 hours that took place in May of 1962. The Cosmonaute that we found is actually a rare, later version of the Breitling that was signed by French retailer LIP. As far as we know, it is still for sale too.
